Wondering Aimlessly

This painting, I did freshemen year, got into a lot of shows at MICA. One of them was the Undergraduate show that I did not expect to get into to because I was competing with the entire undergrad for a spot on the wall. But it made it. This painting is probably 4x5 feet and one needs to look at it in person because it is very intricate.

Drawing of multiple hands interacting

This is a charcoal drawing on a sheet compiled out of multiple pieces of paper. I found it to be an interesting practice to put different kinds of paper together before working on the piece because it gives the piece multiple planes within which  you end up working. I must say it turned out too big and hard to store.

THOUGHTS ABOUT ART

On Art I

The discussion seems empty, that concerning the issue of art and it's reasons, and those in it hopeless. I find it to be a dark kind of sarcasm to see the profession of a painter develop into a dead end. The masters of his skill, most of the time the one who approach his job with love. He is, he did not become an artist. And now, the artists of the later generation, fulfilled with desire to create and the sensibility to see and the outburst...a tragic reflection of reality, a minimalist streak of thinking--you would ask yourself WHY?

I ask myself why? and I see that they are about to loose it. Since the early 1900's, since painting was proclaimed "dead", those left after with passion, but a skill to repress, decided to put art on the operating table. Charge, electroshock, again, put the circulation back on track and the heart beating. Here is the root of all this fuss-- why art is, what is art, is it art?--its considering that art needs the operating table.

The instruments: minimalism, conceptual art, fluxes...Oh don't worry! the instruments are very sterile.

On Art II
I met an interesting individual today. Not an artist, but very thoughtful. He said:
ART IS BEYOND WHAT PEOPLE AT THE TIME CAN SEE OR UNDERSTAND...THAT BLACK PAINTING HAUNTS ME AND IT HAS BEEN 12 YEARS SINCE I HAVE SEEN IT! (he was talking about Malevich's Black Square)

But isn't art made for the circle of critics in an art room and not for the people as of lately? The controversy over the reason for it's creation-- for people or for it's own sake-- has always been there

ART IS NOT AN ADD IN A NEWSPAPER, ON TV, OR ON A BILLBOARD. IT IS NOT TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING, LIKE LIFE IT IS COMPLICATED AND ONE PONDERS UPON IT; IT IS THERE FOR LIFE LONG DIALOG!
